Canadian Beef Industry Conference Poster Competition 2024
The CBIC Student Poster Competition is back for 2024!
Competition Details:
• There will 2 competition streams:
– College/undergrad/diploma students
– Master’s/PhD students
• Research must relate to a challenge that the industry is facing within the four pillars of the National Beef Strategy: connectivity, productivity, beef demand, or competitiveness (http://beefstrategy.com/).
• Posters will be presented to a beef producer audience and relatability and comprehension of the content will be prioritized in the judging criteria.
– Posters will reflect the format of BCRC Research Summaries – [example]
• Students are restricted to ONE submission per student.
• Participating students must be listed as the presenting author. Presenting author substitutions will only be considered if due to extenuating circumstances.
• Evaluations of the posters with Q&A will occur in-person at CBIC on Wednesday August 21st, where the top three students will be determined from each stream to compete for cash prizes on Thursday August 22nd, summarizing their research into a 3-minute verbal presentation.
Participation Timeline:
• April 8th – May 17th, 2024: Online abstract submission is open (link).
• June 2024: Selected abstracts will be notified.
• July 2024: Online poster creation workshop (more details to follow)
• August 6th, 2024: Students required to provide a PDF version of their poster (minor changes can be made after this deadline but will not be reflected in printed copies).
Copies of each poster will be printed by the organizers for distribution to producers and conference attendees to facilitate discussion with students.
• August 21st 2024: Poster presentations will occur. Students will remain by their posters during designated time periods for judges to evaluate their projects and posters (more details to follow)
• August 22nd 2024: Top 3 posters from each stream will be announced and students will summarize their research into a 3-minute verbal presentation in a side-event. Presentations will be targeted at a producer audience. Winners in each stream will be selected and announced with prize money for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
All students participating in CBIC poster competition must be registered for the conference. ALL students will receive a reduced student registration rate of $395.

Abstract:
An abstract is a short communication that allows readers to evaluate the contributions of a scientific study, method, industry solution, extension program, or research technique. As such, an abstract must contain clearly stated, simple sentences to ensure clarity.
Abstract Requirements:
• Abstract text (not including title) limit is 350 words.
• Titles must be concise and relevant to a producer audience.
• Proposed title limit is 25 words.
• Please provided 5 keywords that relate to your abstract content.
• A clearly stated objective in the first sentence.
• Experimental methodology (such as population, experimental design, housing, data collection and statistical analysis).
• Results related to the objective must be stated with the appropriate statistical inferences. One table or figure can be included if this is the most appropriate method for result presentation.
• A clear conclusion that defines the effectiveness and/or application of the results.

Poster Requirements:
• Posters should be landscape with dimensions of 36” x 48”
• Fonts should be sans-serif (e.g., Arial, Calibri, etc.). Minimum font size of 28pt.
• Ensure images are at least 300 DPI for appropriate printing quality.
• Authors should be listed as follows – competitor, supervisor, committee members.
• Encouraged to include a headshot of competitor on the poster.
• Poster sections should be written in lay language suitable for cattle producers.
• Rather than formal scientific poster sections, the poster should be presented similarly to BCRC Research Summaries with the following sections:
– What the goal was (objectives and deliverables)
– What was done (methodology)
– What was found (results)
– What it means for the Canadian beef industry
• Ensure you are registered for the event.
• A poster workshop will take place in July to support students (more details to follow).
• Provide a PDF of your poster by August 6th to [email protected]
